SUSTAINABILITY
The Fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, second only to the oil industry. When I first found out that fact I was gobsmacked. It didn’t seem to make intuitive sense. Since embarking on this label however the reality of the industry has sunken in. We are living in an accelerated age where the structures and mindsets we installed 100 or so years ago now reveal detrimental externalities that we cannot allow to proliferate. “Fast Fashion” is the industry maximising profits and adding more velocity to a system spiralling out of control. Whilst the “Slow Fashion” movement is nothing new the case for it has never been more salient.
Our Slow Fashion practices are as follows:
We produce in small batches or made to order rather than big runs (which incur high waste).
Wherever possible we use organic fabrics and eco friendly Inks and endeavour to make this a priority.
If we use animal products they are a byproduct of the meat industry, however leather is never our first choice and we are continually looking for Vegan alternatives.
Our pieces are designed to be timeless (rather than "throw away") that touch on something archetypal. We don’t chase trends and as such we hope you will look back on your purchase in years to come with the same resonance, still feeling that special spark that drew you to it initially.
Transportation is one of our main challenges and our customers are worldwide. We acknowledge the impact that this has on the environment and wherever possible we sell locally at markets and boutiques.
Arahant works with local taylors in Indonesia who run their own businesses and we pay above average for their work. Our working relationships are joyful, exciting and inspiring for all involved.
I am an artist who wishes to create a life from my own efforts, to be free to express myself and to live a fulfilling life without having to bend the knee to corporate hegemony: No harm to myself or others. This is the heart of the “Slow Fashion” movement and its raison d’être is clear: Freedom.
